As far as traditional drummers are concerned, there are two doctrines as to the proper way to make a drum shell. Drum shells are either laminated or solid (one piece), and there are opinionated devotees to both traditions. Having worked with professional drummers for over thirty years and being a bit of a drummer myself, I can expound upon the superior qualities of both methods. I’m willing to do either. Your drum will be made especially for you. If you have any questions at all about which drum to order, please contact me.
My solid shell bodhrans are made from air dried White Oak, or Ash. Shells are steam bent by hand, with a laminated counter hoop that provides solid support for the drumhead. Solid shell drums are available in 18 & 22 inch diameter sizes.
My laminated drum is made of the highest quality Maple or Birch, laid up in eight plies, with the same counter hoop construction as the solid drum. Laminated shell sizes include 14, 16, 18, & 22 inch frames.
Other sizes, depths, and woods may be available upon request.
In addition to the two shell construction options, my bodhrans can be ordered either with the head traditionally mounted, or with my new tunable design. The tunable design features an interior floating rim which is adjusted with tuning keys providing a tension adjustment for the natural skin head. This feature is particularly beneficial to folks who live where climactic conditions may dictate a more flexible axe.
Bodhrans By Bernier uses only the finest quality goat skins from a small number of quality vendors. I can provide a wide variety of skin types and thicknesses depending on the needs of the customer. Skins are carefully mounted onto the drum and then secured using a double row of brass tacks. The bearing edge of the drum shell has been gently shaped to provide the optimum contact point between the head and shell, guaranteeing the best possible sound transfer.
The standard drum is four inches deep with a natural wood finish and fitted with a double crossbar. You can personalize your drum through a number of available options, including painted or stained shells, hand painted heads, single/no crossbar, exotic woods, various depths/diameters...
Please expect 2-3 weeks delivery time for a standard drum. Custom drum delivery will very accordingly.
